Are you a regular marijuana user looking for a way to go straight? Maybe you want to help a loved one quit but you don’t know how or where to start. You may even be struggling to understand the difference between detox and rehab.

Detoxification, or detox, is the physical process of clearing all traces of marijuana and its metabolites from the body. Marijuana rehab refers to professional treatment of the addict at an inpatient or outpatient facility until they are able to lead a healthy life on their own, free from the drug.

Synthetic marijuana is easily purchased in any head shop and has been sold legally in the US and all over the world under brand names like Spice and K2. These products are often marketed as “herbal incense,” or “herbal smoking blends.” Manufacturers sometimes claim that these are mixtures of natural medicinal herbs. When a package of Spice or K2 is opened it’s contents is in fact dried plant material, but this plant material is usually sprayed with artificial synthetic cannabinoids designed to mimic the effects of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

With laboratory names that sound like the license plate number on your vehicle, one such compound, JWH-018, was made illegal in Germany in 2010. Four weeks after it was prohibited, analysis of synthetic marijuana products revealed JWH-018 had been replaced with another substance, JWH-073. This is an example of how manufacturers are able to dodge the prohibition of these chemical compounds by tweaking their molecular structures. New compounds with identical or similar effects can be designed and brand named synthetic cannabis stays on the shelves and one step ahead of the law.

Unlike THC found in organic cannabis, the effects and health risks associated with the synthetic cannabinoids are markedly worse. Emergency room visits and calls to poison control centers are on the rise for users experiencing rapid heart beat, agitation, vomiting and confusion and hallucinations. Other cases exhibited more severe symptoms such as seizures, acute psychosis, even heart attacks. Fifteen deaths this year have been linked to the drug.

Many of the dangerous chemical compounds found in synthetic marijuana have been filed under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act in recent years, but to avoid blatant disregard for the regulations,  packages of synthetic marijuana continue to be labeled. “herbal incense,” and “not for human consumption.”

This information is a harbinger of a potential new era in the dangerous drug problem, in which legislation will be unable to keep up with an influx of new man made psychoactive substances.  With the cutting edge science of chemical composition in full evolution new designer compounds can be milled out at a staggering rate. The days of derelict teenagers cutting class and smoking pot under the bleachers may be giving way to an age of much more threatening activities involving JWH-018, cannabicyclohexanol, HU-210 and whatever else may be found in a packet of Spice or K2.

When young adults head off to college they are faced with a new found freedom from a life that has more or less been supervised by their parents thus far. Clearly college is supposed to be about furthering education and finding a career path, however, with the reigns loosened, college also becomes a school for partying, which typically involves drugs and alcohol these days.

In a 2002 to 2013 study, research revealed that roughly 20% of full-time college students ages 18 to 22 drink alcohol and use illegal drugs. Many of these young men and women begin experimenting with substances in their first year in college.

The same 2002 to 2013 study determined that, each year, 383,000 students used marijuana for their first time, amounting to an average of 1,000 students a day. Around 450,000 underage students began drinking alcohol each year. More disturbingly, the estimated number of college students who started using prescription painkillers like Oxycontin and Percocet was 251,000 students in one year.

A successful college experience most definitely involves getting to class, passing exams and discovering a passion. Along with that, young people learn how to socialize as adults. Unfortunately, in the culture today, socializing for young adults involves drinking and drugs in a big way. There’s nothing wrong with cutting loose a bit and living while we’re young, but there is a fine line between just having a good time and opening a valve that could lead to serious alcohol and substance abuse problems.

Drug trafficking in Marion County has become the strong focus of federal and state law enforcement agencies. Recently, the Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team busted an elaborate, Ocala-based drug operation that distributed marijuana and cocaine throughout the region. While targeted efforts to apprehend drug peddlers helps to curtail distribution, drug addiction in Ocala Florida continues to wreak havoc on those suffering from the throes of addiction.

According to the U.S. Drug Task Force, Marion County is considered to be one of North Florida’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA). With Florida’s drug-related deaths ranking above the national average, as well as the state’s tendency to be a pit stop for drug transports and trafficking operations, heightened efforts to extinguish drug dealing is just one method to prevent illegal substances from finding ways into the Ocala community. However, for addicts determined to get high, stopping dealers will not stop addiction. Treatment, however, can provide that person with a real chance to overcome the crippling disease.

Drug abuse affects approximately 3.5 percent of Florida residents, based on reports from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Anyone grappling with drug addiction in Ocala Florida, or anywhere in Marion County, getting better starts with getting help. It may be challenging, but the reward of being alive is worth it.
